Whitin Middle School Selected As A 2007 NELMS Spotlight School *  *  *

Whitin Middle School was selected again for the New England League of Middle Schools (NELMS) award. Whitin Middle School, with an approximate enrollment of 630 students in grades 5-8, was selected as a “NELMS Spotlight School” in March 2004. Worcester Magazine (August 2004) featured Whitin “as a Middle School that is frequently recognized, although the community has a low per-pupil expenditure.” The School’s trademark is a positive environment and culture and a strong spirit of staff collegiality. The district offers an extensive staff development program that lays the foundation for teachers to implement best practices, such as standards-based education, differentiated instruction, and strategic writing. The Whitin School Improvement Plan, based on Turning Points 2000, has paved the way for smaller teaching teams, flexible scheduling, and parent involvement.
