Whitin Middle School was selected again for the
New England League of Middle Schools (NELMS) award. Whitin Middle School, with
an approximate enrollment of 630 students in grades 5-8, was selected as a
“NELMS Spotlight School” in March 2004. Worcester Magazine (August 2004)
featured Whitin “as a Middle School that is frequently recognized, although the
community has a low per-pupil expenditure.” The School’s trademark is a positive
environment and culture and a strong spirit of staff collegiality. The district
offers an extensive staff development program that lays the foundation for
teachers to implement best practices, such as standards-based education,
differentiated instruction, and strategic writing. The Whitin School Improvement
Plan, based on Turning Points 2000, has paved the way for smaller teaching
