Program Studies - Grade 1...

First Grade Curriculum at a Glance

English Language Arts

First graders will learn the following in reading/language arts:

• Identify all consonant and vowels
• Identify all consonant and vowel sounds
• Read, write, and spell grade appropriate words
• Read using the following strategies:
• Meaning/picture cues
• Visual/phonics cues
• Language structure cues
• Comprehend what is read
• Identify story elements: plot, setting, characters, events, main ideas
• Will be exposed to variety of literature genres
• Write 3-5 sentences on a topic using proper punctuation
• Express ideas in sequence when writing
• Reread and edit own writing
• Participate in handwriting lessons for proper formation of upper and lowercase letters
• Contribute to group discussions
• Express ideas fluently when speaking
• Listen and follow directions


Math

First graders will learn the following skills in math:

• Develop number comparisons and number concepts
• Record and solve addition and subtraction problems on numbers 0-18
• Solve basic addition and subtraction facts using mental math
• Show an understanding of place value by grouping and recording 2-digit numbers using tens and ones
• Count by 2’s, 5’s and 10’s
• Estimate and measure lengths/weights using non-standard units
• Recognize and give values of coins: pennies, dimes
• Identify time to the hour
• Use calendar and identify months, days, and seasons
• Identify and describe properties of 2 and 3 dimensional objects
• Identify symmetry in patterns, shapes, and objects
• Describe and sort shapes according to attributes
• Reproduce and extend a pattern
• Be introduced to fractions 1/2, 1/3, 1/4
• Identify and use data
• Develop and apply problem-solving strategies
• Record information on and use graphs and charts
• Develop the ability to make numerical estimations


Science

First graders will learn the following skills in science:

• Observe
• Compare
• Classify
• Measure
• Define and control variables
• Communicate
• Infer
• Predict
• Hypothesize

The following topics are covered….
• Pond Life/Frogs …life cycle, compare frogs and toads
• Sand, Rocks and Soil … hardness, comparing samples
• Seeds and Plants …identify parts of seeds and plants
• Simple Machines


Social Studies

In Social Studies first graders will study the following topics:

• Community
• Community Jobs
• Map Skills
• Good Citizenship
• U.S. Symbols
