Reading/Language Arts
In Language Arts (Reading, Grammar and Writing), students should:
Reading:
Know and apply in context all sound-symbol correspondences (such
as vowel patterns, digraphs, diphthongs, etc.)
Have a large sight vocabulary
Read and understand second grade vocabulary used throughout the
year
Integrate word recognition strategies (such as context cues,
picture cues, rereading, etc.)
Apply appropriate comprehension strategies to construct meaning
(such as man idea, details, predicting outcomes, drawing
conclusions, cause and effect, sequencing, compare and contract,
inference)
Vary reading strategies for reading purpose (literature and
content areas)
Identify and apply knowledge of the literary elements of a story
(characters, setting, problem, events, solution)
Read different kinds of text across the curriculum.
Grammar and Writing:
Use punctuation marks appropriately (period, question mark,
exclamation point, comma)
Can identify parts of speech (noun, verb, adjective, pronoun,
adverb)
Use capital letters appropriately
Use common affixes and word endings (re-, un-, pre-, -ful, -ly,
-s, -es, -ed, - ing)
Explore the writing process in Writers Workshop (A portfolio of
these activities will be maintained)
Additionally, students will:
Contribute to group discussions
Follow written and oral directions
Express ideas fluently
Math:
In Math, students should:
Recognize, identify and write numbers to 999
Recognize and use place value: ones, tens, hundreds
Know and apply addition and subtraction facts to 18 using mental
math
Know and apply 2-digit addition and subtraction with and without
regrouping
Identify and state the value of all coins
Count a set of coins to $1.00
Tell time to 5-minute intervals
Skip count by 2, 5, 10
Identify and extend patterns
Identify symmetry
Recognize and identify 2 and 3 dimensional shapes
Recognize standard measurement (linear, liquid, weight)
Describe and sort using attributes
Know and apply graph skills
Know and apply problem-solving strategies
Science:
In Grade 2 Science, the processes of observation, communication,
comparison, ordering, and classifying will be developed through
units on:
Plants, Leaves, Trees
Human Body
Life Cycles: Butterflies
Environment
Social Studies:
Second graders study world and United States history, geography,
economics, and government by learning more about who Americans are
and where they came from. They explore their own familys history
and listen to or read a variety of teacher- or student-selected
stories about: distinctive individuals, peoples, achievements,
customs, events, places, or landmarks from long ago and around the
world. Students learn more economic concepts by identifying
producers, consumers, buyers, and sellers in their own
communities.
