Third Grade Curriculum at a Glance
Reading –The Story Town Reading/Language Arts Program
provides a wide variety of engaging literature for students,
including both fiction and non-fiction selections. Story Town also
offers an extensive library of leveled readers which are written
to customize learning to your child’s specific reading level.
Literacy centers are built in to the guided reading program to
promote independent work skills as well as social skills. This
program includes instruction in making inferences, predicting
outcomes, drawing conclusions, and determining the main idea.
Spelling – Weekly spelling tests will be given based on
words that coincide with the Story Town Reading Series along with
related challenge words.
Writing – Third graders will learn how to write with
creative expression through the Empowering Writers Program. They
will also be taught how to construct an expository paragraph using
a topic sentence, three or four detail sentences, and a concluding
sentence. Poetry, letters, and reports are some other forms of
written expression in the third grade curriculum. Students will
also learn how to edit their writing and will be taught the
cursive alphabet.
Language Arts – Students will learn parts of speech,
subject/verb agreement, capitalization, punctuation, and proper
sentence structure.
Math – The Scott-Foresman series emphasizes problem solving
techniques as well as calculation skills. There is also an
emphasis on the mastery of basic addition and subtraction facts to
facilitate learning multiplication and division facts. Geometry
and fractions are also covered at the third grade level.
Social Studies – Includes learning about the history of the
state of Massachusetts, the local Native Americans, Pilgrims and
Puritans, the events leading up to the Revolutionary War, and the
Town of Uxbridge.
Science – Students will be learning about Life Science
which will focus on animal and plant life cycles. Earth Science
topics include the water cycle, clouds, and the sun/planets/moon.
The study of Physical Science will include an introduction to
energy, sound, and magnetic force.
