Program Studies - Grade 3...

Third Grade Curriculum at a Glance

Reading –The Story Town Reading/Language Arts Program provides a wide variety of engaging literature for students, including both fiction and non-fiction selections. Story Town also offers an extensive library of leveled readers which are written to customize learning to your child’s specific reading level. Literacy centers are built in to the guided reading program to promote independent work skills as well as social skills. This program includes instruction in making inferences, predicting outcomes, drawing conclusions, and determining the main idea.

Spelling – Weekly spelling tests will be given based on words that coincide with the Story Town Reading Series along with related challenge words.

Writing – Third graders will learn how to write with creative expression through the Empowering Writers Program. They will also be taught how to construct an expository paragraph using a topic sentence, three or four detail sentences, and a concluding sentence. Poetry, letters, and reports are some other forms of written expression in the third grade curriculum. Students will also learn how to edit their writing and will be taught the cursive alphabet.

Language Arts – Students will learn parts of speech, subject/verb agreement, capitalization, punctuation, and proper sentence structure.

Math – The Scott-Foresman series emphasizes problem solving techniques as well as calculation skills. There is also an emphasis on the mastery of basic addition and subtraction facts to facilitate learning multiplication and division facts. Geometry and fractions are also covered at the third grade level.

Social Studies – Includes learning about the history of the state of Massachusetts, the local Native Americans, Pilgrims and Puritans, the events leading up to the Revolutionary War, and the Town of Uxbridge.

Science – Students will be learning about Life Science which will focus on animal and plant life cycles. Earth Science topics include the water cycle, clouds, and the sun/planets/moon. The study of Physical Science will include an introduction to energy, sound, and magnetic force.
