Reading/Language Arts
Through varying teaching techniques and skill developments, the
goal is to promote able and independent reading abilities for each
fourth grade student. The promotion of such skills, in conjunction
with an exposure to varying literary sources, will construct and
strengthen not only an aptitude in reading but an attitude that is
necessary for further enjoyment and productivity. In addition to
skills specifically related to decoding and comprehension,
additional attention will be paid to building vocabulary.
Students will learn and apply grammatical skills in order to
foster the creation of coherent and comprehensible written works,
while cursive writing instruction will promote legibly written
pieces.
Spelling skills will be developed through predetermined and
fundamental lessons of conventional and practical words and their
application, stressing phonemic awareness.
Math
Children will learn to accurately compute the four basic
operations and apply them in problem solving situations. Long
division and the multiplication of multi-digit numbers will be
introduced. The concept of estimation will be used to develop the
four math operations.
Children will be taught the concepts of fractions, geometry,
decimals, and probability. Real life skills such as telling time
and the use of money and measurement will be reinforced.
Science
Students will participate in science units taught in the
classroom. These units include in Physical Science, Making Things
Move; in Life Science; Survival in the Environment, Energy and
Ecosystems; and in Earth Science, The Makeup of the Earth, and
Movements in the Solar System.
Social Studies
Students will study the geography and people of the United States
today. Students will learn geography by addressing standards that
embed five major concepts: location, place, human interaction with
the environment, movement, and regions. In addition they learn
about the geography and people of contemporary Mexico and Canada.
