DEPARTMENT OF FINE ARTS MISSION STATEMENT

Our art program uses a multi-disciplinary approach and a traditional studio-based curriculum to establish the foundation for lifelong learning in the arts. Using a variety of learning strategies, students will learn perceptual, critical thinking and problem solving skills to develop their abilities to think creatively. The art program is a sequential course of studies that includes the use of tools and techniques, understanding elements and principles of design, developing craftsmanship, gaining an awareness of art history, and the effective use of technology. The variety of class projects allows students the opportunity to write effectively about the arts, to synthesize and apply new information and to foster artistic and creative expression in a safe environment where students develop respect for themselves and others. Assessment strategies are designed to demonstrate what students know and can do; these include tests, quizzes, exhibits, critiques, oral presentations, and portfolios, as well as graded projects.

The goals of the Art Program are the following:

1) To improve students’ perceptual skills.

2) To encourage students to be inquisitive, to experiment, and to understand the role of play in artistic expression.

3) To introduce students to many mediums, materials, and tools.

4) To expose students to Art History in the context of global events.

5) To strengthen student ability to critique and to evaluate art work.

6) To promote excellence in the areas of problem solving, creativity, and craftsmanship.

7) To bridge subject areas and to make connections through inter-disciplinary studies.

8) To offer opportunities for community service learning.

9) To challenge students to challenge themselves as self-initiated learners.
