UHS PRE-VOCATIONAL Monthly Newsletter
Prevocational Life Skills
~May Update ~
The Prevocational Life Skills class has been quite
productive this month. Students continue to work on
academic skills and community exploration. Our students
have been participating in many events for their respective
grades. The 10th grade MCAS portfolios are complete and
have been submitted to the state. Seniors have been
involved in multiple activities with their peers. Two of
our students very much enjoyed the prom and recent class
trip to the New Jersey Shore. They are now preparing for
graduation. Freshmen and Sophomores continue perform many
jobs throughout UHS. They have shown much growth over the
school year and are maturing before our eyes.
In an effort to do our part to save fuel and cut expenses,
the class voted to forego our usual end of the year field
trip by bus. We have opted instead to take several local
walking field trips into the community. This will help
reduce field trip costs. The fresh air and exercise will
benefit us too.
Last week, we made a visit to DeLuna on Main Street where
the owner gave a spontaneous presentation on minerals and
fossils. It was very interesting and the students and staff
are hoping to return soon. She has many unusual and
interesting exhibits as well as items for sale. On the same
day, we visited Noni's Things on Mendon Street. Students
browsed among the many gift selections and enjoyed it
immensely.
This week, we walked to Koopman's Lumber where students
learned about the many aspects of hardware stores. We saw
how the aisles and departments are organized and how to
easily find what we need. We plan a return visit prior to
the end of school in order to explore more thoroughly.
During the same trip, we visited Town Hall and identified
the offices there and what they are used for. The class
finished the trip with a visit to Milestone's for lunch.
Students practiced reading a menu and ordering
independently. They did great!
On May 16th and 17th two of our paraprofessionals, Pamela
Allen and Laura Burgess, will be attending the annual MTA
Educational Support Professionals Conference in Plymouth,
Massachusetts. They have attended this conference in the
past and have brought back many exciting and inspiring new
ideas to use with the class.
Thank You,
Leslie Lesperance
