Chorus rehearsal is Tuesdays after school until 3:00pm in the
Music Room.
Chorus is open to every student in all grades. The Holiday Concert
is currently scheduled for December.
The Instrumental Music Program at Whitin Middle School continues
to grow. The 2009-10 Instrumental Music Instructors are Mrs.
Kathleen Penza who teaches lessons in grades 5 – 8 and directs
the bands and Mr. Robert Hammerton who teaches instrumental
lessons and co-directs the Whitin School Chorus. The Whitin
School has three concert bands this year - a Beginner Band
(grade 5), an Intermediate Band (grade 6) and an Advanced Band
(grades 7 & 8). In addition, the Middle School Jazz Band
rehearses after school each Wednesday preparing for their
performance at the Meatballs and Music Dinner Concert/Fundraiser
in March.
All instrumental lessons begin the second week of school and
students will soon be busy preparing for their Holiday Concerts
which will be held on Tuesday, December 15th (Beginner Band and
Chorus) and Wednesday, December 16th (Intermediate and Advanced
Bands) at 7:00 PM. (Snow date: December 17th).
Grade 6, 7, and 8 band students plan to march in Uxbridge’s
Annual Veterans’ Day Parade in November and the 5th grade
students join them for the Memorial Day Parade in May.
The Advanced Band and Intermediate Bands are also planning a
trip to the Great East Festival on June 4, 2010. Students will
participate in a competition at a Springfield area school in the
morning and spend the remainder of the day at Six Flags New
England. There are several fundraisers being planned to help pay
for the trip.
More information regarding the band calendar, uniforms, etc. can
be found on Mrs. Penza’s webpage.
