Cell Phone use and visiting the nurse:

We have seen an increase in students using their phones during the school day asking parents or families members to pick them up early from school when they are not feeling well. This is against school policy and causes many issues at school. Cell phones are not allowed to be used by students during the school day. In addition, it is expected that if a student is not feeling well they are to go to the nurse to be evaluated. The nurse is the only person who can evaluate students and determine if they need to be picked up early from school. If that determination is made, the nurse will contact a family member for the student to be picked up.

As we enter into the last week of November we continue to be rolling with the curriculum in all content areas. Students in grades 4-6 are using STMath daily and really enjoying trying to get Jiji successfully across the screen. This program has proven to help students develop a deep conceptual understanding of math. We are fortunate to have this program at Whitin.

In 7th grade students have been presenting their social studies projects and are working with milkweed bugs in science. Students are developing their communication skills as well as their understanding of different habitats.

This week we had our first all school assembly. It was so nice to see our entire student body in the gym listening to speakers, cheering on their classmates and building a sense of community. We discussed behavior expectations, listened to a book about World Smile Day and kicked off Fuel Up to Play 60 with jump roping demonstrations by some of our faithful Fuel Up participants. It really was a great assembly.

    Whitin Weekly Sept. 15th

We had another good week here at Whitin. Students were seen working collaboratively, engaged in meaningful activities in all content areas and using the Chromebooks to enhance their learning. Students are loving the new arrangement in the cafeteria and are enjoying the independence of sitting with who they choose to sit with. All grade levels have open seating which allows students to sit with their friends who they may not see in class. This freedom fosters independence and positive socialization. I am happy to report that students are displaying expected behavior in the cafeteria.
