Superintendent - Highlights from our Buildings
August 13, 2021
Dear UPS School Community,
I hope you had another enjoyable summer week! As a follow up to my earlier letter, I wanted to reach out and provide you some highlights from each of the buildings.
TAFT
Principal Belville and her staff hosted the Extended School Year (ESY) for students PreK-7 which concluded yesterday with great success. We had nearly 100 students participate. The staff are partnering with Beginning Bridges to host Countdown to Kindergarten which will be held August 24th from 6-7pm at Taft. Orientation and tours of Taft are scheduled Monday, August 30th and Tuesday, August 31st from 10-12 pm for any student wishing to see the building and their classroom. The Taft Team are making final preparations around the school and in the classrooms to welcome students back.
WHITIN
Principal DeMarco and her staff have partnered with Principal Belville and the Taft Team in the organization of the Summer Academies. We are excited for this opportunity and expect this will move our learners forward while preparing them for the upcoming school year. The Whitin Team has structured a program to welcome incoming 4th graders on August 30th and 31st. Additional details will be provided as we get closer to those dates. Whitin Intermediate School has been at the center of a transformation, with new flooring and updated painting in a number of areas. Of particular note is the work in the Library. We are excited for the final stages and rollout of a state of the art media center for students. We applaud the collective effort of many in moving that project forward. Our new Assistant Principal, Mr. Sugrue has already made a difference, helping with new hires, updating school handbooks and assisting in the overall preparation for fall opening.
UHS
Principal Rubin led his team through a series of curriculum initiatives over the summer. Enhancements have not stopped and are geared to further support our high school learners. Additionally, UHS educators participated in OpenSciEd training, which will enhance our grade 8 science program and align the curriculum more effectively with the state frameworks, particularly the Next Gen Science Standards. In the area of assessment practices, staff have been examining and training on a variety of standards-based practices across multiple disciplines, leveraging the success that the world language department enjoyed in 2020-21 and looking to make more explicit connections for students in the process of learning. The staff has worked diligently to put in place programs and supports for students who have various degrees of need, including academic, social-emotional, and behavioral, some of which have emerged as more salient since the onset of the pandemic.
We will continue to communicate and provide you with amplifying information as we work on final plans for the opening of school. We wish you and your families the best and hope you enjoy the rest of the summer. We appreciate your trust and confidence in us. Be well!
Sincerely,
Patrick J. Dillon, Ed. D
