UHS Named a Special Olympics Unified Champion School
Uxbridge High School named a Special Olympics Unified Champion School
Superintendent of Schools Dr. Patrick Dillon is proud to announce that Uxbridge High School has been named a Special Olympics Massachusetts Unified Champion School for 2020-21. The recognition comes following a year where Uxbridge demonstrated its commitment to meaningful inclusion through unified sports, inclusive youth leadership, and whole school engagement.
“We are proud of the dedication and commitment of many staff members, students, and families to support and include many students, particularly given the challenges of the past year,” said Dr. Dillon.
UHS was cited for its determination to social connectedness and the importance of including all students, as the school provided activities and opportunities for various populations of students in both in-person and virtual environments, as well as in combination between the two. Students and staff collaborated to foster an inclusive school climate emphasizing acceptance, respect, and human dignity for all students.
“There certainly was no playbook for education in the past year,” said Uxbridge High School Principal Michael Rubin. “Despite the difficulties, our entire community remained wholly committed to improving the quality of experiences, both academically and extracurricular, for all of our students. Recognition like this speaks to the culture we aspire to achieve every day at UHS.”
“When we think of ways we will emerge from this pandemic, fostering mutual respect and acceptance, despite different challenges and perspectives, will benefit us all,” said Dr. Dillon. “It’s wonderful to have students modeling these important values for their peers and our community.”
