Additional Guidance on Masking Requirements

Dear Uxbridge Community:

On Friday, February 25, the CDC provided additional guidance on masking requirements. Part of that guidance included updated information on masking on public buses, including school buses. Following that meeting, the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education and Massachusetts Department of Public Health released its guidance in advance of the return to school on Monday, February 28.

Effective tomorrow, masks will be optional- and no longer required -  in schools as well as on school buses. We have consistently aligned with CDC, DPH, and DESE guidance, including the decision to be mask-optional as of the 28th. CDC made the change to align with its updated guidance that no longer recommends universal indoor mask wearing in K-12 and early education settings in areas with a low or medium COVID-19 risk level. Given our own district’s data, and the concurrent decision to move to a mask-optional environment within the building aligns with this decision for school busing.

I apologize if there was any confusion in the delivery of the earlier messages between the schools in our district; our intent was to communicate the optional mask guidance this morning and then provide additional clarification on buses once we had an opportunity to consider the new information released. In our zeal to communicate the messages to our respective stakeholders, some information may have been slightly different, which is never our intention.

As with most situations, information is ever-changing, and we continue to do our best to convey information and updates as efficiently, timely, and accurately as possible. We thank you for your continued support and patience.  This is yet another step forward in our safe transition back to a pre-pandemic academic environment.

Sincerely,

Patrick Dillon, Ed.D.
