Dear Whitin Families, 

The following is the update for the week of January 9, 2021. 

Students did a nice job returning to school this past week after the winter break.  Students came with a great attitude, were ready to learn and fell right back into the school routine.  Students were also respectful in wearing their masks and following protocols.  

We are still having issues with students writing on the walls of the bathroom.  Our custodian, Frank, is constantly being called to clean up inappropriate writing and graffiti on the walls of the bathrooms in all grade levels.  Mr. Sugrue and I have moved our offices to the halls outside some of the bathrooms so we can monitor students entering and exiting the bathrooms.  We will continue to address this issue and hold students accountable for their actions as this behavior is not acceptable.  

On another more positive note, we have had three of our former students subbing over the last few weeks while they are home on college break.  Angela Young, who is studying to be a science teacher, has been subbing in our science classes and has been providing the students with some great lessons tied to the standards.  Erica Dube, who is studying elementary education, has taken on any job we have asked her.  She supports the students in our Learning Lab, covers 7th grade science classes and 5th grade math and ELA.  Kieler Langemo has also been in every day over the past few weeks.  Kieler is studying political science and cognitive science and plans to get his masters in education.  Kieler has covered a variety of classes as well and the 6th and 7th graders love having him in their classes.  Because of their effort we have been able to manage staff absences and provide students with quality lessons and adequate support.  We will be sad to see them head back to college after this week but are grateful for the time they gave us.  We look forward to seeing them again in the spring.

Urban Air Night: The PTO is working on an alternative date for this event..  

Bussing: Please note if a bus has not arrived at the bus stop within 15-20 min of pick up time especially after a storm seek alternative transportation if possible and let the school know.

Aimee Roche and Nok Tamulis.  They will be sharing the time for the remainder of the school year.

COVID Reminders

If your child has any of the following symptoms, regardless of vaccination status, please keep them home from school and contact your school nurse and pediatrician.

COVID-19 symptoms list (as of 8/18/21): 

• Fever (100.0° Fahrenheit or higher), chills, or shaking chills  
• Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath 
• New loss of taste or smell 
• Muscle aches or body aches 
• Cough (not due to other known cause, such as chronic cough) 
• Sore throat, when in combination with other symptoms 
• Nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea when in combination with other symptoms 
• Headache when in combination with other symptoms 
• Fatigue, when in combination with other symptoms 
• Nasal congestion or runny nose (not due to other known causes, such as allergies) when in  combination with other symptoms

If your child is identified as a close contact at school you will be notified via email. 

If your child is identified as a close contact outside of school, please keep your child home and contact your school nurse.
