Whitin Weekly May 30th

Dear Whitin Families,

The following is the update for the week of May 30, 2022.

Happy Memorial Day to our Whitin Families.  We thank all of the men and women who have and continue to serve our country and protect our freedom.  This past Friday we hosted the 147th Flying Squadron assembly.  It was an amazing assembly to honor our fallen heroes and teach our Whitin Warriors about the sacrifices our brave men and women of the military make to protect our freedom.  Our Whitin Warriors showed tremendous respect and understand the importance of this special assembly.  I was very proud of them.

I was also very proud of our 5th grade chorus who performed God Bless America, the 7th grade band who performed Star Spangled Banner, 6th graders Copper Burdick and Amanda DeSouza who lead the Pledge of Allegiance, 7th graders Emma Peloquin, Josh Lavergne, Hadassah Calixto, Chawanvit Sillapachairuang who recited the poem In Flanders Field, 4th graders Lekshara Velmurugan and Reese Clinton who recited the Gettysburg Address and 7th grader Braelynn Matheson who played Taps during a moment of silence.  It was so nice to see our students participate in the Flying Squadron.

In addition, I was able to attend the 4th grade field trip to Roger William’s Park Zoo this past Wednesday.  It was a beautiful day for the zoo.  The 4th graders showed exceptional behavior on the bus and at the zoo.  There were lots of smiles, laughs and kids being kids.  It was really so nice to see after all they have been through the past few years.  The favorite animal among most of the 4th graders was definitely the elephant.  A trip like this covers so many of the standards not only in science but in college and career readiness, social/emotional learning and so much more.  One student told their teacher, “Now I know what I want to do when I grow up.  I want to be a zoologist.”  We appreciate both the PTO for supporting this enrichment trip as well as our parent chaperons.  Without their support trips like these could not be possible.

School nurse information:

Our interim school nurse is Annemarie Plante.  She has been filling in as our school nurse for the past few weeks.  She has done an amazing job supporting the needs of our students and is already making positive connections.  We are so grateful for Ms. Plante’s consistency and calming nature.  While Annemarie will be communicating directly with parents when a student is sick or visits the nurse for consistency please continue to direct your calls to the main office at Whitin or to Becky Padula at Taft.  Nurse Becky will continue to oversee Ms. Plante and the nurse’s office at Whitin.  Feel free to contact Nurse Becky if you have any questions or concerns: rpadula@uxbridge.k12.ma.us
