February 28, 2022...Masks will be Optional
To the Uxbridge School Community,
After consulting with medical experts and state health officials, on February 9, 2022, the DESE Commissioner announced his decision not to renew the state mask requirement after it expires on February 28, 2022. Per DESE, effective Monday, February 28, students and staff will have the option to continue to wear a mask while in school buildings, but this practice will no longer be required. The Commonwealth’s high vaccination rates, decreasing positive cases, and widespread availability of COVID-19 testing for school personnel and students all factor in this decision. Masking continues to be required on all school buses, per federal order as well as in the nurse's office and districts will continue to follow DESE/DPH quarantine guidelines. The Commissioner reinforced that any individual who wishes to continue to mask, including those who face higher risk from COVID-19, will be supported in that choice. DESE and DPH strongly recommend that unvaccinated individuals should continue to wear masks in school settings.
After consulting with a number of stakeholders to include Town, union, and school leaders, Uxbridge Public Schools will follow DESE/DPH guidance, as the district has consistently done since the onset of the pandemic in March 2020. Therefore, effective February 28, 2022, masks will be optional. As an inclusive community, UPS will continue to support all students, families, and staff choices.
We appreciate the community's support and recognize the students, families, and staff for their ongoing patience and vigilance throughout the year. Thank you for your continued patience and flexibility!
Sincerely yours,
Pat Dillon,Ed.D., Superintendent
