UHS: Staffing Updates
Good morning,
We are excited to share some staffing updates with the community as we near the end of the first semester.
First, we welcome Mr. Russell Wise to the science department. Mr. Wise has been working closely with the department since the onset of the school year, having completed his teaching certification in science/biology as a graduate of Worcester State. Last year, he was hired as our building support substitute and has been primarily teaching eighth graders this year. As a graduate of UHS, he was captain of the football team and also participated in theater for four years.
In addition, as the semester comes to a close, we welcome back Ms. Lisa Struppa, who has been on extended leave. We are grateful for the work of Ms. Kim Marshall these past several months for her expertise and professionalism in the art department, as she stepped in quite capably and ensured that the classes progressed well. Of course, it will be great to have Ms. Struppa back, as she will begin a full takeover of the art classes upon the start of the second semester.
Next, we have the good fortune of welcoming three student teachers to our staff for the spring. In the English department, Ms. Courtney Cristo will be working with Ms. Sheila Bernard as a student teacher. She is a graduate of Shepherd Hill and currently working on her teaching certification and degree at Worcester State University. In addition to her literature interests, she enjoys thrift shopping and up-cycling, and also has a photography business!
We will also be hosting two teachers in Social Studies. Mr. Brandon Dulac is a graduate of Milford High School where he played football and captained the wrestling team. An avid sports fan, Mr. Dulac is majoring in history and minoring in Secondary Education at Worcester State. He will primarily be working with Mr. Frank Barbuto. In addition, Mr. Matthew Marden will be teaching in the social studies department alongside Mr. Hurley Silbor. A Millbury native, he coaches football for the Woolies and is also the head coach of their junior high school baseball team.
Hosting student teachers brings both a good deal of opportunity and responsibility to our school community. While student teachers typically observe and cooperate with the host teacher in the classroom, we also provide opportunities for student teachers to be immersed in our school culture. They will provide outreach to families, feedback on assignments, communication with school counselors, and instructional ideas in the classroom. They give our staff the opportunity to team teach, which can help reinforce new ideas and provide opportunities for smaller group instruction. In addition, the responsibility for our students comes in learning how to adapt and provide feedback to those entering the profession so that they can be well positioned for successful careers. In that spirit, we are excited for not only what our school can offer student teachers but also how they can contribute to our goals for the coming semester.
We know that families can sometimes be concerned when there are changes to staffing. Rest assured that we are both confident in and committed to ensuring that all of these changes work well for the educators, families, and, most importantly, the students.
Feel free to reach out if you have any questions.
Sincerely,
Dr. Michael D. Rubin
Principal, Uxbridge High School
