Athletic Training Information and "Need to Knows"
1. Concussion Information
What is a concussion?
A concussion is an injury affecting the brain that results from a direct or indirect blow to the head. Each individual concussion is unique in occurrence, signs, symptoms, and outcomes. With every concussion, brain function can be altered and therefore needs to be treated quickly and conservatively.
Signs and Symptoms of Concussions
- Headache
- Dizziness
- Nausea/vomiting
- Drowsiness
- Fatigue
- Balance problems
- Sadness
- Nervousness
- Difficulty sleeping
- Irritability
- Sensitivity to light
- Sensitivity to sound
- Feeling mentally foggy
- Sleeping more than usual
2. Impact Testing at Uxbridge High School
Uxbridge High School will be conducting Impact (Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing) Baseline Testing for all athletes. Athletes will be administered Baseline testing at the beginning of their season every two years, as the test results are good to be used for a two-year time span. Impact Testing will also be used post-injury and compared to the Baseline score. NOTE: Impact Testing is not the sole tool used in diagnosing, monitoring, or managing a concussion and will still be combined with other tools for successful management.
3. Return to Play Policy
Following injuries, return to play decisions are made at the discretion of the UHS Athletic Trainer. More specifically, decisions made by the Athletic Trainer only will be for injuries that are solely managed by the Trainer themselves. If an athlete requires further evaluation following an injury (ex. Orthopedics, physician, emergency medical staff), the return to play decision will be a collective one involving all medical staff involved. If any athlete is referred for further evaluation, they will need to provide a note from the physician stating when they are cleared from their care to return to play. The final decision after receiving this clearance will be up to the Athletic Trainer.
Any injury must be documented through the Accident Reporting Form

6. Secondary Insurance
All Uxbridge student-athletes participating in the interscholastic athletic program are covered by a secondary insurance from Lefebvre Insurance, LLC. This policy is a non-duplication, which means that if you have any type of personal insurance coverage, this insurance will only pay what your insurance carrier doesn't pay, and that will only be for what they determine to be reasonable and customary charges. The limits of these charges will be determined by the carrier.
If a student-athlete is injured, no matter how slightly, they must report it to their coach, or the athletic trainer immediately so that an insurance form can be completed. Without an accident form, the secondary insurance will not kick in.
