2026 SUN Bucks (Summer EBT)

Important Summer Food Benefit Information for Families

Massachusetts is again participating in SUN Bucks (Summer EBT), a federal food benefit program that helps low-income families with school-aged children purchase food when schools are closed for the summer. The program provides a $120 lump-sum benefit per eligible student and is administered by the Massachusetts Department of Transitional Assistance (DTA) in partnership with the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE).

Applications are now open. Families can apply online at www.dtaconnect.com or request a paper application from your child's school. Cards will be mailed in June 2026, with benefits available beginning in July 2026.

For more information, visit mass.gov/sunbucks.

Who Is Eligible?

SUN Bucks eligibility mirrors the National School Lunch Program (NSLP). Students determined eligible for free or reduced-price meals during the 2025–2026 school year are automatically eligible. This includes students eligible through:

  • Direct Certification (SNAP, TAFDC, MassHealth/Medicaid, foster care)
  • Categorical eligibility: homelessness, migrant status, runaway status, or Head Start enrollment
  • An approved Uxbridge Public Schools household application for free or reduced-price meals

Do I Need to Apply?

If your child already has free or reduced-price lunch eligibility:

No action is required. Benefits will be issued automatically and a SUN Bucks card will be mailed to you. You do not need to contact the school or submit any application.

If your child does NOT currently have free or reduced-price lunch eligibility:

You may still qualify. There are three ways to apply:

How Will Benefits Be Distributed?

SUN Bucks cards will be mailed directly to eligible families in June 2026. The first round of benefits will be available in July 2026.

To activate your card, call the number on the back and set a PIN using the cardholder’s date of birth and your 9-digit DTA case number (begins with 80), found on your DTA notice or at dtaconnect.com/SUNBucks.

Important Notes

  • SUN Bucks is not the same as Pandemic EBT (P-EBT). Benefits will not be added to any P-EBT cards.
  • Due to the name change, Summer EBT cards from last summer cannot be used. Eligible families will receive a new SUN Bucks card.
  • If you receive a SUN Bucks card this summer, please save it — you may need it if you are eligible again next year.
